ADC Calls for INEC Chairman’s Removal, Alleges Plot to Enforce One-Party State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, accusing the commission of actions capable of undermining Nigeria’s democratic structure.

In a strongly worded statement, the party alleged that recent decisions by INEC—particularly the suspension of recognition of factions within the ADC—are part of a broader plan to weaken opposition parties and pave the way for a one-party state.

The ADC expressed concern that the electoral body’s handling of its internal leadership dispute has escalated tensions rather than resolving them. The party insisted that INEC’s neutrality is now in question, calling on relevant authorities to intervene and safeguard democratic institutions.

The controversy follows INEC’s decision to halt engagement with all factions of the ADC, citing conflicting leadership claims and a court directive to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.

Reacting to the development, ADC leaders warned that the move could disenfranchise party members and disrupt preparations ahead of future elections, including the 2027 general polls.

However, INEC has maintained that its actions are guided strictly by legal rulings and due process, denying any political bias or agenda.

Political observers say the escalating dispute could further strain Nigeria’s political landscape if not urgently addressed through dialogue and judicial clarity.
