Nkeiruka Onyejeocha Resigns as Labour Minister, Eyes Return to House of Reps

Abuja, Nigeria – Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has resigned from her position as Minister of State for Labour and Employment as she prepares to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives.

In a statement shared on social media, Onyejeocha confirmed that her resignation is in line with her intention to return to elective office, specifically to represent the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State—a position she previously held for 16 years.

She expressed deep appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his administration, describing her tenure as “an honour and privilege.” Onyejeocha also thanked her constituents, ministry staff, and Nigerians for their support during her time in office.

“I remain committed to service and to contributing my quota toward building a better Nigeria,” she stated.

Her resignation follows a directive by the presidency requiring political appointees seeking elective positions to step down ahead of the election cycle. Political observers note that her ministerial experience may enhance her chances, broadening her national profile beyond Abia State.

Supporters have described her return bid as strategic, citing her long-standing relationship with constituents and her experience in legislative affairs. As preparations for the next election intensify, Onyejeocha’s move signals growing political activity in Abia State and beyond.
