Eke O Ako Raises Alarm Over Alleged Intimidation in Abia State

A public affairs commentator, Eke O Ako, has raised serious concerns over what he describes as “state-sponsored intimidation” under the administration of Alex Otti.

In a detailed statement, Ako called on international human rights bodies, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, Reporters Without Borders, and the United Nations Human Rights Office, to investigate alleged patterns of suppression of free speech in the state.

Ako alleged that individuals who question government spending or demand accountability are subjected to coordinated attacks, including blackmail and character assassination. He cited a recent incident during a live programme on Magic FM 102.9 Aba, where journalists reportedly expressed concerns about the administration’s attitude toward scrutiny.

He further referenced a media chat involving Governor Otti, claiming that a journalist, Chika Nwabueze, faced a hostile response after asking questions about the verifiable impact of government projects. According to Ako, such reactions reflect a broader intolerance for dissent.

Additionally, Ako alleged personal targeting, including the spread of false accusations and threats against him and his family. He described these actions as coordinated efforts aimed at silencing criticism.

However, the Abia State Government has not officially responded to these allegations at the time of filing this report.

The claims, if substantiated, raise concerns about press freedom, transparency, and democratic accountability in the state.
