“You’re Not the Court”—ADC Slams INEC Chair, Vows to Hold Congresses

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over recent comments by its chairperson regarding the party’s internal congresses. The party insists that INEC does not have the authority to block or interfere with its congresses.

In a statement released today, ADC leadership emphasized that internal party matters are governed by the party’s constitution and relevant electoral laws, not by unilateral directives from INEC officials. “You’re not the court. ADC will continue to hold its congresses in accordance with the law and our party constitution,” the statement read.

The party further warned that attempts to intimidate or obstruct its activities would be met with legal resistance. ADC officials assured members and stakeholders that preparations for upcoming zonal and national congresses are ongoing and will proceed as scheduled.

This development comes amid growing tensions between INEC and political parties over the conduct of internal elections and congresses. ADC leaders have reiterated their commitment to transparency and fairness in their internal processes, highlighting that party members’ rights to participate in democratic governance should be respected.

Political analysts say the standoff underscores the delicate balance between regulatory oversight by INEC and the autonomy of political parties in Nigeria. The ADC’s firm stance signals its readiness to challenge any perceived overreach, emphasizing adherence to due process while advancing internal democracy.
