ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the Inspector General of Police did not disband all police units, but rather ordered a reduction of tactical teams to streamline operations and improve efficiency.
In a statement issued on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, explained that the IGP’s directive was aimed at rationalizing the number of tactical squads operating across states, not eliminating them entirely. The clarification followed widespread misinterpretation of the initial announcement, which some media outlets had reported as a total disbandment of all police tactical units.
“The IGP has not disbanded any police unit. What has been done is a reduction and restructuring of tactical teams to prevent duplication of duties and enhance operational effectiveness,” Adejobi stated.
The police spokesperson noted that the exercise is part of ongoing reforms to ensure that personnel are deployed optimally and that citizens receive better policing services. He added that core police units and essential tactical squads remain fully operational to tackle crime and maintain public safety.
The clarification has been welcomed by civil society groups who had earlier expressed concern over potential security gaps. The NPF assured Nigerians that the reorganization would strengthen, not weaken, the force’s capacity to respond to security challenges.
