ABUJA, NIGERIA – The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Monday as the camp of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, openly defied the party’s National Reconciliation Committee led by former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, vowing to proceed with the party’s national convention as planned.
Sources close to the faction revealed that Wike’s allies are adamant that the convention must hold on schedule, rejecting any proposal for postponement or further reconciliation talks. The camp accused some party leaders of using the reconciliation process to stall the convention and manipulate outcomes in favor of their preferred candidates.
“We are not going to be swayed by any last-minute maneuvers. The convention will hold, and we are ready,” a senior aide to Wike declared.
Tambuwal’s committee had earlier appealed to all factions to sheath their swords and allow for a comprehensive reconciliation before any major party activity. However, the Wike camp has maintained that the committee lacks the neutrality to mediate fairly.
The widening rift threatens to derail the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections, with stakeholders warning that failure to resolve the crisis could lead to mass defections and weaken the PDP’s chances in 2027. The party’s National Working Committee has yet to issue an official statement on the latest developments.
