ADC Faction Raises Alarm Over INEC Directive, Fears Exclusion from Elections

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns that a recent directive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could prevent it from fielding candidates in upcoming elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, warned that the development may significantly affect the party’s participation in the electoral process if not urgently addressed.

According to the faction, INEC’s decision to halt receiving correspondence from the party pending the outcome of an ongoing court case has placed the ADC in a difficult position.

The party argued that this move contradicts existing electoral timelines and may lead to what it described as “forced non-compliance” with legal requirements.

The faction further explained that political parties are required by law to submit notices and documents within stipulated deadlines. However, with INEC reportedly refusing to accept such submissions, the ADC fears it may be unable to meet those obligations, thereby risking disqualification from presenting candidates.

INEC had earlier stated that its action was in compliance with a court order directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of the leadership dispute within the ADC.

The crisis stems from a prolonged leadership tussle within the party, which has led to multiple legal battles and competing claims to its national leadership.

Political analysts warn that if unresolved, the situation could weaken the ADC’s position ahead of future elections and reshape the dynamics of opposition politics in Nigeria.
