Abia APC Condemns ₦40k Salary to Vigilante Operatives, Calls Otti Government Insensitive

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Abia State Chapter, has strongly condemned the payment of a paltry ₦40,000 monthly salary to members of the Abia State Vigilante Services under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

In a press statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC described the remuneration as scandalously low and a clear invitation to insecurity.

The party referenced the recent arrest of a vigilante commander, Ms. Tochi Oluebube, over alleged misconduct, arguing that poor welfare conditions naturally breed frustration and professional compromise.

“A system that underpays, undervalues, and demoralizes those entrusted with the critical responsibility of safeguarding our lives is only inviting the inevitable consequence: insecurity,” the statement read.

The APC further accused Governor Otti of financial recklessness, noting that he allocates a staggering ₦933 million monthly as a security vote—higher than Borno State—while frontline operatives are left neglected. The party also compared Abia unfavourably to Enugu State, where vigilante operatives earn a minimum of ₦80,000.

The opposition party urged the governor to urgently review the salaries and welfare of vigilante operatives and other low-income workers, warning that the current wage structure is immoral and dangerous.

“Abians deserve better. Our security personnel deserve dignity, respect, and a living wage. Anything short of this is unacceptable,” the APC stated.

The Abia State Government has yet to respond to the allegations as of press time.
