The debate over the selection of the next Vice-Chancellor at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has taken a contentious turn, with the credibility of a key commentator now under intense public scrutiny.
Dr. Philips Nto, a former Abia State Commissioner for Finance, recently published statements accusing the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Comrade Fidelis Edeh, of bias and attempting to “foist” a candidate. In response, critics are pointing to Nto’s own substantial legal and administrative record, arguing it undermines his standing to critique the integrity of the process.
Nto’s leadership as Provost of the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu (ASCETA) was marked by widespread allegations of authoritarianism, arbitrary staff dismissals, and financial opacity. A state panel recovered a publicly-funded vehicle from him.
The most serious issue is an ongoing criminal trial. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Nto with 16 counts, including the alleged diversion of over N47 billion in state funds. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail, with the trial continuing at the Federal High Court in Umuahia.
Critics maintain that an individual facing such grave charges cannot credibly question the ethical standards of others, urging that the focus remain on MOUAU’s best interests.
