Public Scrutiny of MOUAU Critic Amid Fraud Trial, Past Misconduct Claims

A public dispute has erupted over the credibility of a commentator in the ongoing Vice-Chancellor selection at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU).

Dr. Philips Nto, a former Abia State Finance Commissioner, has accused the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Comrade Fidelis Edeh, of bias. In response, critics are highlighting Nto’s own substantial legal and administrative baggage.

Central to the controversy is Nto’s ongoing criminal trial. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged him with 16 counts, including the alleged diversion of over ₦47 billion in state funds. The charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty, stem from his time in public office.

This is compounded by his contentious tenure as Provost of the Abia State College of Education, Arochukwu (ASCETA). His leadership was widely criticized for alleged authoritarianism, staff victimization, and financial opacity, culminating in a state panel recovering a publicly-funded vehicle from him.

The core argument from Nto’s critics is straightforward: an individual facing such severe corruption charges and with a record of alleged administrative misconduct cannot credibly question the ethical standards of others in a sensitive academic leadership process.
