Tinubu Denies One-Party Agenda, Says Opposition Vital

ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Tinubu has dismissed claims that his administration is pursuing a one-party agenda, insisting that a strong opposition is essential to the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention in Abuja, the President emphasized that while his party is dominant, the role of opposition parties in holding government accountable remains crucial.

“We are not building a one-party state. Democracy thrives on competition. Opposition parties must be strong, vibrant, and responsible. That is how we grow,” Tinubu stated.

His remarks come amid concerns from opposition leaders who have accused the ruling party of using state institutions to weaken rival parties ahead of the 2027 elections. The APC has consistently denied such allegations.

Tinubu urged political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid actions that could undermine the nation’s democratic institutions.

“Let the people decide. Let ideas compete. That is the Nigeria we are building,” he added.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party have yet to respond to the President’s comments. Political analysts have welcomed the statement, calling for a more inclusive political environment.
