INEC Shifts Osun Gov Campaign Deadline Following Election Date Change

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a consequential adjustment to the campaign timeline for the Osun State governorship election, following the earlier decision to shift the poll date by one week .

In a statement released on Thursday, April 16, 2026, INEC confirmed that the last day for political parties’ campaigns in the state is now midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026 . This adjustment brings the campaign deadline in line with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that all campaign activities cease no later than 24 hours before election day .

The Commission had previously revised its timetable for the 2027 general election cycle, moving the Osun governorship election forward by one week from August 8 to August 15, 2026 . That change automatically triggered a corresponding shift in the campaign cut-off date.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who signed the statement, urged strict compliance from all parties involved .

“The Commission urges all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the revised timeline,” Haruna said .

Campaigns for the Osun governorship election officially commenced on March 11, 2026, with 14 political parties fielding candidates for the August 15 poll . Notably, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party did not present candidates for the election .

INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in the state .
