APC Crisis Deepens in Abia: Ex-Minister Henry Ikoh Vows to Petition National Leadership Over Governorship Primary Outcome

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has deepened dramatically as former Minister of State, Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh, has vowed to formally petition the party’s National Working Committee over the outcome of the Abia State governorship primary election that produced Chief Eric Opah as the party’s flagbearer for 2027.

Chief Ikoh, who polled 5,905 votes against Opah’s 125,977 votes in Thursday’s primary exercise, has rejected the outcome, alleging that the exercise was fundamentally flawed, massively manipulated, and riddled with irregularities that do not reflect the true will of APC delegates across the state’s 17 local government areas.

The former minister expressed deep disappointment at what he described as a departure from the party’s own internal democratic principles, insisting that the primary exercise fell far short of the transparency and credibility standards that the APC owes its loyal members and aspirants.

“We will not accept this result in silence. We will petition the APC national leadership and pursue every legitimate democratic avenue available to us to ensure that justice is done and our mandate is protected,” Ikoh declared in a strongly worded statement.

Chief Ikoh, who had earlier received the unanimous endorsement of prominent Abia APC leaders drawn from all 17 local government areas ahead of the primaries, expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty, urging them to remain calm and law-abiding as the petition process unfolds.

Political analysts say Ikoh’s petition threat signals the beginning of a fresh and potentially destabilising internal battle within the Abia APC as the party attempts to present a united front ahead of the 2027 governorship contest against Governor Alex Otti’s incumbent Labour Party administration.
