Police Arrest Officer Newton Isokpehi Who Threatened to Shoot Anyone Recording Him on Duty

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested ASP Newton Isokpehi following the explosive viral spread of a video in which the officer was captured on camera brazenly threatening to shoot and kill any Nigerian citizen who attempted to record him while he was on duty.

The video, which spread like wildfire across Nigerian social media platforms, triggered a massive wave of public outrage, with millions of Nigerians demanding immediate disciplinary action against the officer whose threat was seen as a dangerous and unlawful display of impunity by a uniformed personnel of the state.

In a swift response to the public backlash, the Anambra State Police Command moved to arrest the embattled officer, a development that has been widely commended by civil society groups, human rights organisations, and concerned citizens as a necessary step toward accountability within the force.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has consistently maintained a zero-tolerance stance against police officers who intimidate, threaten, or abuse the rights of Nigerian citizens — making Isokpehi’s arrest a direct reflection of the force’s current reform agenda.

Legal experts have noted that recording police officers in public spaces is a constitutionally protected right of every Nigerian citizen, and that any threat against such lawful conduct constitutes a gross violation of citizens’ fundamental rights.

Civil liberties advocates are now calling for the officer’s prosecution and dismissal, warning that anything short of full accountability would send the wrong message to other officers tempted to abuse their authority.

As of the time of filing this report, the specific charges filed against Isokpehi and the next steps in the disciplinary process have not been officially announced by the Anambra State Police Command.
