Outrage as Vigilantes Beat Corps Member to Death in Benue

A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, identified as Ben Agir, has been allegedly beaten to death by members of a community vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State .

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday night, April 19, 2026, at Mbajor settlement near the LGA secretariat during a routine patrol when the 23-year-old was mistaken for a motorcycle thief . A local source disclosed that the vigilantes allegedly beat him unconscious without giving him a chance to explain himself .

The Chairman of Buruku LGA, Raymond Aondoakura, confirmed the incident on Thursday, expressing dismay. “From what I gathered, they apprehended him and suspected he was a bike snatcher. Before he could explain himself and present his identification card, one of the leaders started beating him, claiming he was not telling the truth. They beat him to a coma,” Aondoakura said .

He noted that the victim was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Aondoakura stated that all suspects involved have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution . He also announced the immediate suspension of vigilante activities in the area pending proper regulation.

“This unfortunate act does not represent who we are. It is a grave violation, and it will not be tolerated,” he declared .

NYSC authorities noted that preliminary information suggests the deceased may have been serving in Gombe State and was visiting home on holiday .
