Suspense as Supreme Court Delays Verdict on PDP, ADC Leadership Appeals

The Supreme Court on Thursday, April 23, 2026, reserved judgment in two separate but significant appeals challenging the leadership structures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), leaving members of both parties in tense suspense.

A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, announced that judgment dates would be communicated to the parties after hearing arguments from counsel.

PDP Leadership Dispute

In the PDP case, an appeal filed by the Senator Idah Wada-led National Working Committee (NWC) seeks to challenge the Court of Appeal’s decision that reinstated the Damagum-led NWC. The court heard arguments from Chief Chris Uche (SAN), counsel for the appellants, and Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), counsel for the respondents. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Abubakar Aliyu (SAN), remained neutral and urged the court to follow its previous decisions.

ADC Leadership Crisis

Simultaneously, the court heard an appeal filed against the dissolution of the ADC’s Board of Trustees and the subsequent removal of former National Chairman, Chief Ralphs Okey Mark. Counsel Emeka Etiaba (SAN), representing the Board of Trustees, urged the court to restore the status quo ante, while the ADC legal team led by Okey Obike argued that the appeal had become statute-barred.

With both judgments reserved, the political atmosphere remains charged. Until the apex court speaks, both parties will continue to operate under existing court-sanctioned interim arrangements, deepening uncertainty about who leads the opposition heading into the 2027 general elections.
