n a major political realignment, twenty-one members of the Kano State House of Assembly have officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers announced their cross-carpeting on Monday, January 26, 2026.
This move follows the recent defection of over 774 NNPP members in Rimin Gado Local Government and trails the resignation of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf from the NNPP. The governor, citing internal crises, is set to formally join the APC.
Prominent figures among the defectors include the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore; Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu-Butu; Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain; and Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Shehu Fammar.
The mass defection significantly alters the political landscape in Kano State, consolidating the APC’s dominance in the legislature and raising questions about the future of the NNPP in its former stronghold.
