Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has been widely applauded for reconstructing the 5.5 km Ozuitem-Uzuakoli (Elugwu Mba) Road in Bende Local Government Area, a critical link that had remained untouched since 1981.
The road, which connects Uzuakoli and Item, was last attended to by former Imo State Governor Sam Mbakwe before the creation of Abia State. Its reconstruction marks a major step toward rural transformation and economic revival.
Ms. Augustina Odor, Secretary-General of the Southeast Young Leaders Consultative Forum, described the project as “looking like a road to heaven” and the best in the state, noting that Kalu’s intervention has given locals a “new stress-free life.”
The project is part of a broader strategy by the Deputy Speaker to revive neglected infrastructure, with over 20 other road projects in his constituency either completed or initiated.
The commendation highlights Kalu’s commitment to evidence-based leadership and his ability to turn long-standing promises into reality. For rural communities, this road is not just a lifeline but a promise to unlock years of untapped economic potential and improve quality of life.
