ADC Condemns Tinubu’s $516m Loan Request for Sokoto–Badagry Highway

In a statement signed by its leadership across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, the ADC described the request as “alarming” and emblematic of an administration that has made “reckless borrowing its default economic policy, with little regard for sustainability, accountability, or the well-being of future generations” .

While acknowledging the importance of infrastructure, the forum questioned the government’s lack of a clear repayment strategy, noting that Nigerians are witnessing “a troubling pattern where debt accumulation is prioritised over prudent fiscal management, innovation, and domestic resource mobilisation” .

The legislators also raised concerns about the timing of the loan request, which comes ahead of the 2027 election cycle. “Is this truly about development, or is it another attempt to create avenues for political patronage and electoral advantage?” the statement queried .

The ADC called on the National Assembly not to act as a “rubber stamp,” demanding full disclosure of financial details, procurement processes, cost-benefit analysis, and a credible repayment plan before any approval is granted .

The forum further urged the government to prioritise productivity-driven policies, industrial growth and job creation instead of relying heavily on external borrowing . President Tinubu is seeking the loan from Deutsche Bank to construct key sections of the 1,000-kilometre highway linking Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States .
