Former Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Enugu State, positioning himself as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Nnaji, a renowned engineer, energy expert, and former federal minister, secured the PDP ticket following a primary exercise that underscored his wide acceptance among party delegates across the state.
His emergence signals a significant political development in Enugu State, where the PDP has historically maintained a stronghold since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
The former minister served as Minister of Power under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, where he was credited with initiating key reforms in Nigeria’s power sector, including the privatisation of electricity distribution and generation companies.
Political observers say Nnaji’s strong technocratic background, name recognition, and extensive network across Enugu State make him a formidable contender in the forthcoming governorship race.
His emergence is expected to reshape the political dynamics of the South-East state, as both the ruling party at the state level and opposition forces prepare for what promises to be a highly competitive electoral contest in 2027.
Nnaji is yet to make a formal public statement on his emergence at the time of filing this report.
