Umahi Explains Why Tinubu Keeps Borrowing

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing policy, stating that the federal government takes on loans specifically to fund large-scale infrastructure projects that will serve Nigerians for generations to come.

Umahi made the remarks during an inspection tour of ongoing federal road and bridge projects along the Abakaliki-Afikpo Highway in Ebonyi State, where he told Nigerians to understand the rationale behind the administration’s borrowing.

“We are borrowing because of things we do on our roads and bridges. The good thing is that when we borrow and invest in infrastructure, we rebuild roads for the next 100 years,” the minister stated.

Umahi disclosed that the total value of projects under President Tinubu — both inherited and legacy projects — amounts to N34 trillion.

The minister described the projects as unprecedented in the history of the South-East, insisting that no previous administration had invested so heavily in the region’s infrastructure.

Umahi also warned the South-East to overwhelmingly support President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, cautioning that failure to do so could jeopardise the continuation of major federal infrastructure projects across the region.

“Today, there is hardly any state in Nigeria without a construction site under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he added. Vanguard News
