ASUU Warns of Fresh Varsity Crisis Over FG’s Failure to Implement 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning that Nigerian universities may be heading toward another crisis if the Federal Government continues to delay the implementation of agreements reached with the union in 2025.

ASUU leadership raised the alarm, expressing deep frustration over what it described as the government’s consistent pattern of signing agreements with the union and failing to honour its commitments — a cycle that has repeatedly pushed Nigerian universities to the brink of industrial action.

The union specifically flagged the non-implementation of key provisions in the 2025 pact, including outstanding issues bordering on university funding, earned academic allowances, research grants, and the revitalisation of public universities across the country.

ASUU warned that the patience of its members is wearing thin, and that unless the Federal Government demonstrates concrete steps toward full implementation of the agreement, a fresh strike action may become unavoidable.

The union also decried the deteriorating state of infrastructure in Nigerian universities, poor welfare conditions for academic staff, and the government’s perceived lack of genuine commitment to educational development.

Education stakeholders and students have expressed anxiety over the warning, recalling the devastating impact of ASUU’s prolonged strikes in previous years, which cumulatively robbed Nigerian students of nearly two academic years.

The Federal Ministry of Education is yet to issue a formal response to ASUU’s latest warning at the time of filing this report.
