A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) .
Tuggar, who resigned his ministerial position in March 2026 in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive for political appointees seeking elective offices to step down, made the declaration on Saturday at the APC state secretariat in Bauchi .
“Our state stands at a crossroads. Despite our abundant resources, many people remain poor and lack access to quality education and healthcare. This must change,” Tuggar said .
Agriculture as Core Priority
The former minister singled out agriculture as a primary driver for economic revival, noting that his background in business and farming has prepared him for leadership . He pledged to invest in farming, livestock production, rural roads, and storage systems.
“Our core message here is that we will move from subsistence to prosperity, making agriculture a business, not just survival,” Tuggar declared .
He also promised support for small and medium enterprises, development of solid minerals, urban renewal, expansion of clean energy, and the creation of technology hubs for the youth .
Security and Healthcare
On security, Tuggar expressed concern over rising insecurity and promised to tackle the problem through community policing, dialogue, and stronger collaboration with traditional institutions .
He also pledged to improve maternal and child healthcare, expand social protection for vulnerable groups, and strengthen public hospitals across the state .
Political Background
Tuggar, who served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023, was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007 on the platform of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) . He previously contested the governorship seat in 2011 and 2015 but lost both times .
