Trump Cancels US Envoys’ Pakistan Trip for Iran Peace Talks, Says ‘We Have All the Cards’

President Donald Trump has abruptly cancelled a planned peace mission by his top envoys to Pakistan for a second round of negotiations with Iran, citing Tehran’s internal disarray and refusal to engage directly .

The dramatic announcement came on Saturday, April 25, 2026, just hours before Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were scheduled to board an 18-hour flight to Islamabad to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi .

“I just cancelled the trip of my representatives going to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with the Iranians,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work! Besides which, there is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!”

The cancellation followed Araghchi’s departure from Islamabad after meeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir — without any direct engagement with the US delegation . Iran had previously ruled out face-to-face talks, insisting all communication be routed through Pakistani mediators .

Despite the diplomatic setback, Trump sought to reassure that the move does not automatically mean a return to war. “No, it doesn’t mean that. We haven’t thought about it yet,” he told Axios .

However, the conflict has already inflicted severe global economic damage, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed for eight weeks, driving oil prices to multi-year highs .
