The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam, is reportedly facing impeachment proceedings as part of political realignments linked to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to sources familiar with the matter, the governor’s move to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in January 2024 is part of a wider agreement with APC leaders in the state, one condition of which is the removal of the deputy governor.
In his place, Governor Yusuf is said to be proposing Murtala Sule-Garo, the APC deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 election, as a replacement.
The defection is also expected to mark the end of Yusuf’s longstanding political relationship with his mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and would leave the NNPP without any state governor in Nigeria.
Additionally, the APC’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, is reportedly being positioned to contest the Kano Central Senate seat in 2027.
Governor Yusuf is said to be keen on participating in the APC congresses scheduled for February to consolidate his influence within the party in Kano.
