President Donald Trump has confirmed that Iran sent a new peace offer amid ongoing negotiations to end the Middle East conflict, but he rejected the proposal and cancelled his envoys’ planned trip to Pakistan for further talks .
Speaking to reporters on Saturday before boarding Air Force One, Trump disclosed that the Iranians put forward a new peace proposal .
“They gave us a paper that could have been better, and interestingly, immediately when I cancelled it, within 10 minutes we got a new paper that was much better,” Trump said .
The President declined to offer specifics about the content of the proposal, stating only that “they offered a lot” . He reiterated that one of his key conditions remains that Iran “will not have a nuclear weapon.”
The cancellation of the envoys’ trip occurred after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed from Pakistan, where he had met with mediators to present a framework for ending the conflict . The US envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were scheduled to travel to Islamabad for what the White House described as an “in-person conversation” with Iranian representatives .
Trump explained that he cancelled the negotiations because of “a lot of travelling” and because his envoys “weren’t meeting with the leader of the country” . Instead, the President said the US would continue talks via telephone and that Iran could “call us anytime they want” .
Despite the diplomatic setback, Trump has extended a ceasefire relating to the conflict . However, the US naval blockade on Iranian ports remains “in full force” according to the US military .
