The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, alongside members of the National Working Committee (NWC), on Wednesday received a verification team from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja .
The INEC team’s visit was part of the Commission’s statutory responsibility to verify political parties’ compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended). The exercise focused on the Party’s documents, financial accounts, and personnel records .
Also present at the meeting were the Party’s departmental directors, who provided necessary clarifications and documentation during the verification process.
CDA News Nigeria Gathered that the INEC verification is a critical first step for any political party intending to participate in the general election. Section 82(5) of the Electoral Act 2022 designates the national chairman and national secretary as the custodian of the party’s constitution and other instruments of governance. Failure to meet the commission’s requirements could impact the party’s ability to field candidates .
Although there has been no official statement from the APC regarding the outcome of the meeting, the exercise confirms that the ruling party is actively undertaking internal preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. The verification process also provides the Commission with the legal framework to monitor party finances and the conduct of primaries .
