PDP Crisis Deepens: Wike Bloc Rejects Makinde’s Interim NWC and Primaries Schedule

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been plunged into an even deeper constitutional and organisational crisis as the political bloc loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has formally and forcefully rejected both the interim National Working Committee (NWC) installed by the Makinde-backed faction and the primaries schedule attached to it — setting the stage for what could become an irreconcilable split within Nigeria’s largest opposition party.

In a strongly worded rejection that has sent shockwaves through PDP’s national leadership structure, Wike’s allies described the emergence of the Makinde-sponsored interim NWC as illegal, unconstitutional, and a blatant power grab designed to hand Governor Seyi Makinde and his presidential ambitions an unfair and illegitimate advantage over other stakeholders within the party.

The Wike bloc further dismissed the proposed primaries schedule as a product of a compromised and unauthorised process — one they insist lacks the legal standing and internal party legitimacy required to produce results that would be binding on all members and factions.

The rejection dramatically widens the fault lines already tearing the PDP apart, pitting two of Nigeria’s most powerful and resourceful political figures — Wike and Makinde — against each other in a battle that is now as much about personal political survival as it is about the soul and direction of the party ahead of 2027.

Senior PDP members and elders are said to be deeply alarmed by the escalating crisis, with frantic behind-the-scenes reconciliation efforts underway to prevent the party from fracturing completely along factional lines at the worst possible time — just as opposition consolidation is urgently needed to mount a credible challenge against the ruling APC.

Legal challenges are also being threatened by the Wike camp, with party lawyers said to be reviewing options for approaching the courts to nullify the interim NWC’s composition and halt any primaries conducted under its watch.

Political analysts warn that unless urgent, credible, and independent mediation is initiated, the PDP risks heading into the 2027 elections as a deeply divided, weakened, and self-destructing political force — handing President Tinubu and the APC a gift they could scarcely have hoped for.
