Senate Throws Out Principal Offices Rule as Oshiomhole Fires Fresh Salvo at Akpabio

Tension inside Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber escalated this week as the Senate reversed a controversial rule governing principal offices, even as former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, intensified his public criticism of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The reversal, which caught many observers by surprise, followed growing internal pressure from senators who had opposed the rule as an overreach of leadership authority. Critics argued the provision concentrated too much power in the hands of presiding officers, undermining legislative independence.

Meanwhile, Oshiomhole — a vocal figure in APC politics — did not hold back, slamming Akpabio over what he described as high-handed leadership style and disregard for due process within the chamber.

“Leadership must be accountable, not absolute,” Oshiomhole was quoted as saying, deepening the rift between two of Nigeria’s most prominent political heavyweights.

Political analysts warn that the ongoing feud could further fracture APC’s unity in the Senate, with potential consequences for the passage of key executive bills ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Senate is yet to issue an official statement addressing Oshiomhole’s remarks.
