Nigeria Ranks Third in the World for Students Studying Abroad, New Global Report Reveals

Nigeria has been ranked third globally for the number of its citizens studying abroad, according to a new international education report, underscoring the alarming and accelerating rate at which Nigerian students are seeking academic opportunities outside the country.

The ranking places Nigeria behind only two other nations in terms of the sheer volume of students enrolled in foreign universities and institutions, reflecting a troubling trend that education stakeholders say is directly linked to the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s public university system, frequent academic strikes, and the worsening economic conditions that have fuelled the broader japa wave.

The United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and Australia remain the top destinations for Nigerian students abroad, with thousands more also choosing Ireland, Cyprus, and various European nations as alternative study destinations.

Education analysts warn that the ranking is a damning indictment of Nigeria’s failure to invest adequately in its higher education infrastructure, noting that the country loses billions of naira annually in foreign exchange as families fund overseas tuition and living expenses.

The brain drain implications are equally alarming, as a significant percentage of Nigerian graduates who study abroad reportedly choose to remain in their host countries upon graduation, depriving Nigeria of the skilled human capital it desperately needs for development.

Civil society groups and education advocates are calling on the Federal Government to urgently address the root causes driving students abroad, including poor funding of universities, incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), inadequate facilities, and insecurity on campuses.
