The Labour Party (LP) has taken a decisive step toward the 2027 general elections with the formal constitution of a screening committee saddled with the responsibility of evaluating aspirants seeking to fly the party’s flag across various elective positions.
The committee, set up by the party’s leadership, is expected to assess the eligibility, credentials, and suitability of all aspirants in line with the party’s constitution and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
A statement from the party’s national secretariat confirmed the development, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal democratic processes and ensure that only credible and committed candidates emerge from the primaries.
The screening exercise is expected to cover aspirants for federal and state legislative seats, as well as governorship positions in states holding elections in the coming cycle.
Party officials urged all intending aspirants to obtain the necessary forms and appear before the committee within the stipulated timeframe, warning that late submissions would not be entertained.
Political observers say the move reflects Labour Party’s determination to consolidate on its 2023 electoral gains and build a stronger, more competitive structure ahead of 2027.
