Nigerian Political Parties in Frenzied Dash to Produce Candidates in Historic Primaries Season

Nigeria’s political landscape is ablaze as major parties scramble to nominate candidates in what is shaping up to be the most fiercely contested primaries season in recent memory, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Under INEC’s approved timetable, party primaries are expected to take place between April 23 and May 30, 2026, with presidential and National Assembly elections fixed for January 16, 2027, and governorship and state assembly polls set for February 6, 2027.

The APC has slated its presidential primary for May 23, 2026, while its governorship and legislative primaries run between May 15 and May 21. The PDP fixed its presidential primary for May 26, while the Labour Party, NNPP, and SDP are scheduled for May 28 to 29.

INEC confirmed that all 22 registered political parties submitted their membership registers ahead of the extended May 10, 2026 deadline, a key compliance milestone for the electoral process.

However, the primaries have not been without crisis. In Rivers State, the power tussle between Governor Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike played out dramatically, with all 32 Fubara-aligned aspirants disqualified while Wike loyalists were cleared. In Ondo, Katsina, Kaduna and other states, allegations of imposition, disqualifications and defections have trailed the exercise.

Political observers warn that as the 2027 election season gathers momentum, peaceful and transparent primaries will be critical to strengthening democracy and public confidence in the electoral process. PM News Nigeria
