The two-week-old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to continue. This follows a meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) on Tuesday, where it evaluated the government’s latest proposals.
While the government’s negotiation team presented a documented response to ASUU’s demands, feelers from various university branches indicated strong support for continuing the industrial action. ASUU officials from several universities had earlier confided that their members voted to reject the government’s offers, citing unresolved critical issues.
The union is pressing for the full implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement and other lingering demands. In a related development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a four-week ultimatum to resolve all disputes with university unions or face a nationwide shutdown.
