NLC Declares Working Class and Poor Majority Are Bleeding, Condemns Worsening Insecurity and Economic Hardship

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has used the occasion of the Eid-ul-Adha celebration to issue a powerful and deeply sobering message — declaring bluntly that Nigeria’s working class and poor majority are bleeding under the combined weight of a worsening economy, galloping inflation, and an insecurity crisis that continues to devastate lives and livelihoods across the country.

In the strongly worded Eid message, the NLC condemned what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to adequately protect ordinary Nigerians from the twin devastation of economic hardship and violent insecurity — stressing that while the nation marks a sacred festival of sacrifice, millions of Nigerian workers and their families have nothing to celebrate.

The labour union noted that the removal of fuel subsidy, soaring food prices, stagnant wages, rising unemployment, and the continuous depreciation of the naira have pushed the working class to breaking point — with many workers unable to feed their families, pay school fees, or afford basic healthcare.

The NLC further condemned the worsening security situation across Nigeria — from banditry and kidnapping in the North to herder-farmer conflicts in the Middle Belt and violent attacks in the South — describing the government’s response as grossly inadequate and unacceptable.

“The poor majority of Nigerians are bleeding. Governance must return to the people,” the NLC declared.
The Congress called on President Tinubu’s administration to urgently implement pro-worker economic policies, reverse the declining purchasing power of Nigerian workers, and take decisive action to restore security and safety across all geopolitical zones.
