IBADAN – Healthcare services at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, were significantly disrupted on Saturday as the hospital’s resident doctors fully complied with a nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
The strike, which began on November 1, is due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet key demands. These include a 200% increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), the full implementation of new allowances, and the immediate recruitment of clinical staff to address severe manpower shortages.
Dr. Gboyega Ajibola, President of the UCH Association of Resident Doctors, confirmed the total compliance of all members, including medical officers and house officers. He stated that the action is “total and comprehensive,” with no emergency services being exempted.
Dr. Ajibola emphasized that the strike is a struggle for a “functional, just, strong, and resilient healthcare system.” He warned that patients would be unable to receive specialist care, leading to reduced admissions, surgeries, and clinic services, while also acknowledging the financial impact on the hospital.
