Trump Pumps the Brakes on Iran Peace Deal — “Time Is on Our Side,” US Blockade Stays Until Deal is Signed

United States President Donald Trump has pulled back from expectations of an imminent peace deal with Iran, declaring on Sunday that he has instructed his negotiating team not to rush into any agreement, even as both sides acknowledge that talks are progressing significantly.

In a strongly worded social media post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal in that time is on our side. Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes!”

Trump added that the US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz “will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed” — keeping maximum economic and military pressure firmly on Tehran as negotiations continue.

“Our relationship with Iran is becoming a much more professional and productive one,” Trump wrote, before issuing a clear warning: “They must understand, however, that they cannot develop or procure a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb.”

The statement represents a notable step back from Trump’s own earlier declarations on Saturday, when he said a deal with Iran was “largely negotiated” and suggested an announcement was imminent — raising expectations of a diplomatic breakthrough that now appears further away than anticipated. The caution also came after senior Republican lawmakers warned that rushing into a deal could be a “disastrous mistake.”

According to reports, the deal being negotiated would open the Strait of Hormuz, end active hostilities, unfreeze certain Iranian assets, and guarantee further negotiations to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking from India, signalled that more news could emerge on Sunday, while a senior Iranian source told Reuters that if Iran’s Supreme National Security Council approved a memorandum, it would be forwarded to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei for final approval.

The world watches closely as one of the most consequential diplomatic showdowns of 2026 hangs delicately in the balance.
