Anosike Crushes Okiyi Kalu in Abia PDP Governorship Primary With 16,543 Votes, Set to Battle Otti in 2027

Dr. Kelechi Anosike has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Abia State ahead of 2027, delivering a comprehensive defeat to former Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu (JOK), in what was a keenly contested primary exercise conducted across the state.

Anosike scored 16,543 votes to defeat former Commissioner for Information John Okiyi Kalu, who scored 3,145 votes, while the former Deputy Chief of Staff to former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Olugu Kalu Ugba, scored 961 votes.

The election victory was announced by the Chairman of the PDP in Abia State, Abraham Amah, at the PDP office in Umuahia with the approval of the PDP electoral panel for Abia State, led by Chris Nnadi. The primary was conducted in all 184 electoral wards in the state and was monitored by officials of INEC, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies.

The Abia PDP chairman disclosed that some people allegedly refused to turn in results from five wards, but explained that the results already gathered from the 179 wards overrode those exceptions and conclusively confirmed Anosike’s victory.

Anosike, who has been critical of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, argued that the people of Abia State were being short-changed and described the current government’s performance as “media hype and exaggerated performance with nothing concrete on ground,” vowing to industrialise the state, boost small and medium enterprises, and unlock Abia’s vast untapped resources if elected.

Anosike’s emergence sets the stage for a three-way battle for the Abia Government House in 2027, with the PDP flagbearer set to challenge both the incumbent Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party and APC candidate Chief Eric Opah.
