Pope Leo XIV Demands Global Disarmament of AI in New Encyclical

Pope Leo XIV has officially called for the immediate “disarming” of artificial intelligence to safeguard humanity from algorithmic dominance.

In his historic first encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity), released at the Vatican on Monday, May 25, 2026, the Pontiff warned against a reckless corporate and geopolitical race for algorithmic supremacy. The Pope explicitly stated that disarming AI does not mean rejecting modern technology.

Instead, it requires dismantling the dangerous mindset of “armed” commercial and military competition. He strongly condemned delegating life-and-death military decisions to automated machines, labelling the use of lethal autonomous weapons as morally unacceptable.

Furthermore, the Pontiff exposed the hidden “new forms of slavery” underlying tech development, pointing to the exploitation of child labourers mining rare earth minerals and underpaid content moderators. He urged global leaders to establish binding legal frameworks to ensure technology remains human-friendly and transparent.
