The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed all states across the federation on high Ebola preparedness alert — directing the immediate activation of emergency public health protocols as concerns over a potential Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak continue to mount both within Nigeria and across the broader West African region.
The alert, issued to all State Ministries of Health, Primary Healthcare Commissions, port health services, and relevant emergency response agencies, instructs health authorities at every level of government to immediately activate their Ebola emergency response frameworks — including enhanced disease surveillance, strengthening of isolation facilities, training of health workers on EVD identification and management, and the stockpiling of essential personal protective equipment.
The NCDC directive comes in the wake of the NCAA’s earlier Ebola alert to airlines and airport operators — signalling a coordinated, multi-agency national response to what health authorities are treating as a credible and urgent public health threat that demands proactive and comprehensive preparedness measures before any confirmed case emerges on Nigerian soil.
The agency emphasised that early, decisive preparedness action is Nigeria’s most powerful defence against Ebola — drawing on the country’s hard-won experience managing the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Lagos, which was widely praised internationally as a model public health response that successfully contained what could have been a catastrophic epidemic.
The NCDC specifically directed all states to strengthen point-of-entry surveillance at international airports, land borders, and seaports — ensuring that all travellers arriving from countries currently experiencing or at elevated risk of Ebola outbreaks are properly screened, monitored, and managed in line with established WHO and NCDC protocols.
State epidemiologists and rapid response teams have been placed on standby alert — ready to deploy immediately upon notification of any suspected Ebola case anywhere within the country.
The agency urged all healthcare workers across Nigeria to maintain heightened vigilance, use standard infection prevention and control precautions in all clinical settings, and immediately report any patient presenting with symptoms consistent with Ebola Virus Disease — including sudden onset of fever, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, and unexplained bleeding.
Nigerians have been assured that the NCDC is monitoring the situation closely in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), and international health partners — and that all necessary resources and technical support are being mobilised to ensure the country is fully prepared to detect, contain, and respond to any potential Ebola threat.
The NCDC called on members of the public to remain calm but vigilant — urging anyone who develops symptoms consistent with Ebola, or who has had contact with a suspected case, to immediately contact the NCDC emergency line on 0800-970000-10 or visit the nearest health facility without delay.
