Military Blockade Stops Planned Borno Insecurity Protest

A planned protest against rising insecurity and abductions in Borno State was halted on Monday following the deployment of military personnel and armoured vehicles to the protest venue in Maiduguri.

The protest, scheduled to hold at Filling Polo in Maiduguri, was organised to draw attention to worsening security challenges and increasing cases of kidnappings in parts of the state.

According to reports, heavily armed soldiers were stationed at the venue, forcing organisers to suspend the demonstration over fears of confrontation.

The leader of the protest group and President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, alleged that the deployment was intended to intimidate peaceful protesters. He said the organisers would submit a fresh notification letter to security agencies before announcing a new date for the protest.

Kaigama also claimed that several residents who travelled from affected communities were discouraged from participating because of the heavy military presence.

The protest comes amid renewed concerns over terrorist attacks and abductions linked to insurgent groups operating in the North-East region.
