Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has defended his controversial ultimatum to Fulani leaders in Oyo State, even as the Arewa Consultative Forum and Northern Elders Forum warned that Nigeria risks descending into anarchy if the Federal Government fails to act.
The crisis followed a viral video in which Igboho issued a two-hour ultimatum to Fulani leaders in the Igboho community, Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, demanding the release of abducted pregnant woman Mrs Kuburat Omowumi, her son, and other relatives — who Oyo State police confirmed remain in captivity.
Igboho maintained that his advocacy targets criminal elements perpetrating abductions, killings, and banditry across the South-West — not any ethnic nationality.
But the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof Tukur Muhammad-Baba, described the ultimatum as unconstitutional and dangerous, warning it amounted to ethnic profiling and could trigger retaliatory violence nationwide.
“Their activities pose a threat to national security, and if they remain unrestrained, there is a risk of copycat backlash from others and our slide into catastrophic anarchy,” he cautioned.
The NEF’s Prof Abubakar Jiddere echoed the concern, insisting no ethnic group should be collectively blamed for the actions of criminals, and urging Nigerians to prioritise peace over ethnic sentiment.
The Coalition of Northern Groups equally condemned the ultimatum, calling for lawful approaches to resolving the crisis.
