Ex-Minister Idika Kalu Urges Igbo to Join APC En Masse

Elder Statesman Calls for Strategic Political Alignment

Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, has called on the Igbo to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in large numbers, describing the party as where the ethnic group should “pitch their tent”.

The elder statesman made the call when he hosted the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and other APC leaders at his country home in Ohafia, Abia State. He emphasised the need for robust Igbo representation within the party’s structure.

Timing Coincides with Party Registration Drive

The call aligns with the APC’s ongoing nationwide electronic membership registration (e-registration), a drive described by party leaders as a move to modernise its database and strengthen grassroots cohesion. Dr. Kalu specifically urged Ndigbo to take advantage of this exercise.

This appeal is part of a broader effort by APC leaders in the Southeast to consolidate support for the party and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections. Earlier in January, Southeast APC leaders and governors held a meeting in Enugu, declaring “total and unwavering support” for President Tinubu’s re-election and urging the zone to avoid scattering its votes.

Context of High-Profile Engagement

The visit highlights the APC’s courtship of influential Igbo leaders. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who is leading outreach in the region, commended Dr. Kalu as a role model and presented him with a brochure detailing his legislative work.

Dr. Kalu, who was a presidential aspirant in 2003, promised to continue contributing to national development and praised the Deputy Speaker for making the Igbo proud.
