“Childish And Puerile” — Presidency Fires Back At Peter Obi After NDC Candidate Calls On Tinubu To Resign Like Starmer

The Presidency and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi have traded sharp words after Obi urged President Bola Tinubu to emulate resigning British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and step down over unmet campaign promises.

In a post on X, Obi argued that Tinubu had failed to deliver on key pledges — including stable electricity supply, reduced insecurity, and improved living standards — and should take political responsibility as Starmer had done in the United Kingdom.

Obi also pointedly recalled that Tinubu had previously demanded the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic hardship, including during the Chibok schoolgirls abduction crisis.

The Presidency responded swiftly and sharply. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed Obi’s call as simplistic political grandstanding, noting that Nigeria operates a presidential system with fixed four-year terms — unlike Britain’s parliamentary structure.

“Moving to use X to harangue the President out of office is off the mark and anti-democratic,” Onanuga stated.

The Presidency also cited APC’s recent victories in Ekiti and senatorial elections in Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers as evidence of Tinubu’s continued popularity, and challenged Obi to wait for the 2027 presidential ballot before seeking public judgment.

On security and the economy, the Presidency credited Tinubu’s administration with neutralising terrorist kingpins, rescuing thousands from captivity, and recording consistent positive GDP growth since 2023.
