US Threatens Renewed War as Iran Nuclear Deal Remains Elusive

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply, with Washington issuing stern warnings of resumed military action as negotiations over a lasting nuclear deal continue to stall.

Senior US officials say President Donald Trump wants a deal to end the war but is seriously considering resuming military action due to Iran’s rejection of key American demands and its refusal to make meaningful concessions on its nuclear programme. Tribune Online

The crisis traces back to February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran, targeting its nuclear and ballistic missile programme, during which Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed.

Since then, both sides have engaged in fragile talks mediated through Pakistan, Qatar, and Oman, but deep disagreements persist. Iran has insisted that negotiations over uranium can only begin once agreement is reached on a memorandum ending the war, while Trump has repeatedly demanded that Tehran relinquish its more than 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.

A framework agreement is said to be “95% there,” with negotiators haggling over the language detailing Tehran’s nuclear stockpile and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The US and Iran are working toward a memorandum of understanding, but disputes over language concerning Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions have continued to hold up a final deal.

In the latest development, Trump ended a key meeting on Friday without announcing a “final determination” on a deal, adding that Iran must agree never to possess a nuclear weapon and that the Hormuz Strait must be immediately opened for unrestricted shipping traffic in both directions.

Iran’s IRGC warned that if the Strait of Hormuz is attacked, Tehran’s forces would break the US naval blockade, and that Iran may withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The standoff has rattled global energy markets and pushed US inflation to multi-year highs, raising the stakes for a resolution as American midterm elections approach.
