Nigeria Issues Urgent Warning to Citizens in South Africa Amid Xenophobic Protests

The Nigerian government has issued an urgent safety alert to Nigerians living and working in South Africa, warning them to avoid any form of confrontation as xenophobic protests flare across parts of the country today.

The alert, believed to have been communicated through Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria, urged citizens to remain indoors, stay vigilant, and steer clear of protest flashpoints until the situation is brought under control.

Xenophobic tensions in South Africa have periodically targeted foreign nationals, with Nigerians among the most affected communities during previous outbreaks of violence.

The Nigerian government called on South African authorities to guarantee the safety and protection of all foreign nationals on their soil, in line with international obligations.

Nigerians in distress within South Africa are advised to contact the Nigerian High Commission immediately for assistance and guidance.
Authorities back home continue to monitor the situation closely.
