Tension has engulfed parts of Ibadan, Oyo State, as angry residents, students, teachers, and civil society organisations flooded the streets demanding the immediate rescue of pupils and teachers kidnapped from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
Protesters marched through major roads brandishing placards bearing messages including “Bring Back Our Children” and “Enough of Insecurity,” directing their frustration at security agencies and government authorities whom they accused of slow response.
The demonstration follows the devastating attack of May 15, 2026, when armed gunmen stormed schools in Oriire LGA, brutally killing a teacher and abducting several pupils and staff members in a chilling assault that has shocked the nation.
Adding pressure to the crisis, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike across all Oyo State public schools, paralysing education in the state until the victims are safely returned.
Security operatives were deployed across Ibadan to monitor the protest and maintain order as demonstrators sustained their calls for urgent government intervention.
Many protesters voiced deep anguish over the deteriorating security situation affecting Nigerian schools, insisting that classrooms must remain safe spaces for children.
“Our children deserve to learn without fear. The government must act now,” one protester was heard declaring.
As pressure mounts on both state and federal authorities, Nigerians continue to ask the critical question —
What should the government do to tackle school kidnappings and insecurity in Nigeria? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
