UYO, NIGERIA – Tension is brewing in Akwa Ibom State as Governor Umo Eno has reportedly abandoned the state’s long-standing zoning arrangement, declaring automatic return tickets for himself and his deputy ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move, which was announced during a meeting with political stakeholders in Uyo on Wednesday, has sparked outrage among leaders from the Uyo Senatorial District, where the governorship position is expected to rotate following the completion of Governor Eno’s first term. The governor, who hails from the Eket Senatorial District, is currently in the second year of his first term.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that the governor’s declaration caught many party chieftains off guard, with several leaders expressing opposition to the decision. Critics argue that the move undermines the zoning formula that has ensured political stability and inclusivity in the state since 1999.
“Zoning is the reason we have peace in Akwa Ibom. Dumping it now will create unnecessary tension,” a party stalwart said.
The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has yet to officially comment on the development. Governor Eno’s media team has also not issued a formal statement clarifying the declaration.
Political observers warn that the decision could trigger a major political crisis in the state if not properly managed.
