The political crisis in Rivers State escalated on Thursday as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, publicly accused Governor Siminialayi Fubara of deliberately sidelining the legislature and governing without its consent.
Addressing journalists with 10 other lawmakers, Amaewhule described the governor’s earlier statement—that he was waiting for a meeting convened by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike—as “unnecessary and unfortunate.” He countered that the Assembly had been ready to engage, but the governor had been unavailable.
Amaewhule leveled serious allegations, stating that Governor Fubara has been spending from both the 2024 and 2025 state budgets without the House’s approval and has defaulted on all agreements reached with the Assembly. The Speaker accused the governor of working “tirelessly for another round of political crisis” and urged him to become the leader the state needs.
