ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has announced the scrapping of the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) as part of a sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s basic education system.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa disclosed the reform in Abuja on Monday, revealing that a unique identification number will now be assigned to every learner from primary school through tertiary institutions. The new system, he said, will track students’ academic journey seamlessly, eliminating the need for multiple entrance examinations.
“This identifier follows the child for life. No more loss of records, no more repeat exams,” Alausa stated.
The reform aims to curb examination malpractice, reduce bottlenecks in transition from primary to secondary school, and create a centralized database for policy planning. Admission into federal unity colleges will now be based on continuous assessment linked to the identification system.
Reactions are mixed, with parents’ associations demanding clarity on implementation timelines. The ministry assured stakeholders that pilot programs will commence before full rollout in 2027.
