ABUJA, NIGERIA – A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the removal of former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola from the party’s leadership register.
The faction, loyal to the party’s National Working Committee led by Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, accused the duo of illegally parading themselves as ADC leaders following a contentious national convention. In a letter to INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the group insisted the electoral body must recognize only the leadership produced by its recently held convention in Abuja.
“We will not allow political interlopers to hijack our party. INEC must act decisively,” a faction spokesperson declared.
The crisis has deepened divisions within the ADC, with both factions laying claim to the party structure ahead of upcoming elections. INEC is yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate the commission is reviewing the conflicting claims.
Political analysts warn that prolonged infighting could weaken the party’s electoral viability.
